Douglas J. Gelb, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Neurology in the University of Michigan Medical School. He is considered a national leader in neurologic education, and is part of a small group of investigators who have conducted research in the field. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Harvard College in 1977, Dr. Gelb completed his doctorate (1982) and medical degree (1984) at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He joined the U-M faculty after completing his neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco in 1988. In 1992, Dr. Gelb became director of the third-year medical student neurology clerkship, and developed a syllabus that eventually evolved into a textbook. It is required or recommended by many neurology clerkships across the country, and it has been translated into two languages. In 2004, Dr. Gelb became director of a new second-year medical school course on diseases of the nervous system.
